The Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano is a submarine volcano located about 30 kilometers southeast of Fonuafoสปou, an island that is part of the nation of Tonga. In 2015, its second eruption formed a new land surface that gave rise to an impressive island whose existence could last anywhere from six to thirty years. Today, that island is known as Hunga Tonga Island.
Back on January 15, 2022, the Tonga Geological Survey team was preparing to film one of the most spectacular eruptions in the history of this distant kingdom. At a distance of roughly 15 kilometers, the Tonga Geological Survey captured this stunning footage of the Honga Tonga erupting in epic fashion.
This eruption was part of a series of eruptions which occurred over a short time span. One of which was powerful enough to cause a tsunami to hit the island of Tonga. Countries such as the United States, Japan and Chile also went on high alert. In some regions, such as Nukualofe, more than 100,000 people witnessed the ashes falling down on their capitol. Despite the damage and chaos, experts are hopefully that this will be the last eruption of the Hunga Tonga volcano for some time.
