Spectators Almost Hit by Flying Ice!

Spectators Almost Hit by Flying Ice!

Despite stories of dwindling animal populations and rising sea levels, climate change can feel like something you just read about. The concept seems out of reach until you experience it personally, like seeing a gigantic chunk of ice falling into the ocean. Calving is a process whereby glaciers lose mass, become unstable, and melt in the ocean. On June 20th, 2021, tourists captured footage of Tracy Arms Fjord Glacier mid-calving in Juneau, Alaska. The clip shows large chunks of ice collapsing into the water, resulting in massive waves.

Calving happens naturally, but warming seas and weather can accelerate the process. Melting glaciers are one thing that can contribute to sea level rise. If climate change continues at the current rate, water levels could rise to 70 meters, resulting in severe flooding in coastal cities globally. Climate change could make footage like this a much more common sight.
